Travel time: 11 months (2011-2012)
Number of countries visited: 24
Distance travelled: We drove 22,000km
Mode of transport: Weisenberger, the german work van
Churches visited: over 100
Claim to fame: Visiting 5 countries in one day.
Favourite bits: Discovering the Algarve in Portugal, impromptu trips to Russia and Morocco, Waking up on cliff tops, beaches and a wide array of amazing places, the muesli they sell at Pingo Doce – its like schmackos for Anita!
Least favourite bits: Our clutch snapping in expensive Sweden, getting bone-chillingly cold as winter caught up with us in Germany, UK customs tearing our van apart in Portsmouth.
Following our honeymoon trip of 2010 we desperately craved a return visit to Europe. We sought freedom to spend as long as we pleased in each place, and didn’t want the hassle of finding hotels or hostels each night, so buying a van that we could convert into a camper was a must.
Due to a number of factors (our little budget, and knowing how squeezy some European roads can be!) we wanted to buy something as small as possible; settling on a Citroen Berlingo. Whilst its paintwork wasn’t exactly ‘discrete’ (it was a plumbing van I think!) it took us to the furthest reaches of Europe and back without skipping too many beats. We wrote a website on how to buy a car in Europe afterwards.
After 6 months in the van we sold it to a guy in London who was sending it on to Ghana, and we jetted off to catch the summer sun in Malta. After 4 months there we stopped by Egypt and the Philippines on the way home… so it was quite the epic adventure!
