Travel time: Aug 2013 to May 2014
Number of countries visited: 7
Distance travelled: 26,000 miles (41,000 km)
Driving time: 650 hours (27 days straight!)
Mode of transport: Pickles, the Chrysler Town and Country
Volcanoes climbed: 5
Elevation change: from 4,506m (Mexico) to -298ft (Death Valley, USA)
Number of people who told us we would die in Mexico: 8
Number of times we died in Mexico: 0
Favourite bits: Climbing volcanoes in Hawai'i, fulfilling a dream of living in a Manhattan apartment and having soup delivered, Cruising Illinois Route 66, Eating Buffalo wings in Buffalo (they are the best after all!), Migrating south with the monarch butterflies, swimming in a thermal river, going on safari, beach-bumming in the caribbean.
Least favourite bits: Getting scammed by a dodgy dealer in Queens (resulting in us having to buy a new car two weeks in), having the police wake us twice in the USA, being told we would die in Mexico, paying huge amounts for campgrounds.
We found ourselves here quite suddenly and unexpectedly. We planned to being our Americas trip in 2014 (after saving our nest egg for the future), but with the Perth economy experiencing a slump and Andrew’s contract coming to an end we decided to take the leap and go… with two weeks’ notice! This is why we keep our lives simple at home – it packs into boxes easer! :-)
Starting in New York we bought a car and headed south as far as D.C, then up the coast to Boston, over the border to Montreal and then as far east as Chicago before heading south. After 3 months in the USA we crossed the border into Mexico at Texas and have been heading further south ever since.
How long will we go for? How far will we travel? Even we don’t know the answer to that…. Except that we will keep going until we stop having fun – so it could be awhile! :-)
